Mother’s recently relocated to a large and swank new location - the street-level lobby of the Embassy Suites Hotel (conveniently, across from the famed Voodoo Doughnuts.) For casual pizza on a great street, my kids love Life of Pi on NW 23rd Ave.īeer: Solid brewers include: Breakside (any location), 10 Barrel and Deschutes Brewing. Other great family spots include: Boke Bowl (ramen and steam buns) and Mother’s Bistro & Bar, a family spot with a comfort-food as it’s theme. There are nearly 60 them smattered in historic and modern sites across the region. But, you can never go wrong for a family of any age with almost any McMenamins pub for a unique atmosphere and pub fare (locals may disagree on service, but we all still flock here). Long waits - even at casual spots - abound. For a sit-down Portland meal at one of the hot-spots, dinner reservations are pretty standard. I personally frequent a few: Sterling, Barista and Water Avenue Coffee.ĭinner: We often hit-up brewpub happy hours around the city with our brood light fare, light prices, relaxed vibe. Almost any roaster still in business in Portland serves a solid cup. You wouldn’t think of a day without a dark cup of salvation. Slurp!Ĭoffee: This is Portland, after all. Lunch: The food carts, are always a good choice - OR - a kid favorite, Boxer Ramen.

And then there's the donut situation - all over the city: Blue Star, Pip's Original and the gold-standard of Portland-ness, Voodoo Doughnuts. All are kid-friendly, often locally sourced and delish. If you are lucky enough to be a tourist in Portland mid-week, you can dine like a local (read: without waiting in lines!)īrekkie: Since you’ve got time on your side, I’d recommend hitting up breakfast hotspot on a weekday, including Mother’s Bistro, Besaw’s, Broder Cafe or Gravy. What should a family do in between matches? My suggestions for a car-free trip, staying close-in to the downtown core: Eat Saunter around downtown, hit genuine forested trails in Forest Park, nosh at food carts and famed restaurants - all without setting foot in a car or Uber.īetween Portland International Airport's MAX Train connection and the historic Providence Park stadium, you can handily rely on public transportation. Both the men’s MLS Portland Timbers and the Thorns play in the same venue - sometimes within days of one another. Plus, a brand new stadium expansion - this season - means the game is even better.

Only in Portland this appetizer can be found as Boxer Ramen’s gem.The atmosphere in the downtown Providence Park stadium is electric. The Thorns average 17,653 fans per game double any other professional women’s soccer club.

This reminds me of my childhood where I often accidentally mixed ingredients that’s unconventional and would turn out delicious.

My impression of okonomiyaki tots is that it is another creation that is simple, yet full of culture. Maybe it is an accidental creation that turned out to be perfect and unique. I found myself eating more of it and I had to force myself to stop before I end up in a food coma🙄.

All I know is that fried tater tots topped with Bonita flakes and its sauces was simply decadent. I don’t know if it is because I’m a lover of tater tots as it was staple in my household growing up. It was different but it did not disappoint me. It is not a pancake with lots of veggies but a bunch of tater tots. Okonomiyaki tots is not the typical one you see at a Japanese restaurant. It normally consists of a wheat dough cooked on a griddle and with anything you like to put on it but never in my mind that someone would think of using tater tots. Okonomiyaki, which means “grilled as you like it” in Japanese, is traditionally a pancake with any mixture of meat, seafood, and vegetables you like. Every restaurant has one or more on the menu that sets it apart from the others….a competitive advantage that makes customers drawn to the restaurant.īoxer Ramen in downtown Portland was brave enough to create an appetizer that no one else would probably have thought of….an okonomiyaki fusion made out of tater tots, Bonita flakes, and its special spicy sauce.
